Microsoft Studios’ UK-based Lionhead Studios hasn’t released anything but Fable games since 2008. That might change, however, as the company has launched Lionhead Incubation — an initiative to “to find new ideas and inspiration that can then be turned into groundbreaking games, large or small.” One year ago, Lionhead Incubation grew out of its annual “Creative Day,” and in particular a project called InkQuest, a video of which is embedded at the top of this post. Unfortunately, InkQuest won’t be making it into production; however, Lionhead Incubation will continue on. “Show up and wrestle with the ideas until we find that tiny bit of magic, and see where it leads us,” is the mantra of Lionhead Incubation, according to the studio’s blog post on the topic. The studio plans to share its successes and failures on its blog, “hopefully evolving into a regular cycle of interesting things for you to see or play.” Lionhead is far from the only studio to allow its developers to shift resources to smaller projects or participate in game jams for creative renewal; Ubisoft’s Child of Light grew out of a similar process.
