The portrait of Star Wars¡¯ future is becoming clearer as it was recently announced that a new movie trilogy is in the works. There are several other Star Wars endeavors confirmed in the meantime, such as the Mandalorian & Grogu movie, Andor: A Star Wars Story season two, and Star Wars Jedi¡¯s final chapter, but aside from Respawn¡¯s Jedi swan song it is unclear what the future of Star Wars games looks like. Star Wars Eclipse appears to be a handful of years away at best and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic¡¯s remake has gone radio silent, so Star Wars Jedi: Survivor¡¯s sequel is the only tangible game to look forward to.
Star Wars¡¯ upcoming theatrical trilogy, or at least an upcoming movie, is supposedly featuring Rey. If so, Rey will likely wield a lightsaber again and potentially lead a new generation of Jedi. Star Wars¡¯ last trilogy of movies was fairly underwhelming, especially when compared to its predecessors or other recent Star Wars media, and therefore it¡¯ll have a lot of respect to earn back somehow. It¡¯ll hopefully succeed in doing so, though, because a new trilogy could give Star Wars a deep well of stories to tell and fill a gap that¡¯ll be left in games following Star Wars Jedi: Survivor¡¯s sequel.
How Star Wars Outlaws¡¯ Trailblazer and Blaster Configurations Bite Off More Than They Can Chew
Star Wars Outlaws' Trailblazer and blaster configurations are neat, though their skill and module branches lean on the redundant side.
Star Wars Needs a Fresh Trilogy of Ideas for Its Games
Besides its prominence in Star Wars Battlefront 2, including its single-player campaign, Star Wars¡¯ sequel trilogy hasn¡¯t laid many frameworks for associable games. Indeed, the Star Wars Jedi series, Star Wars Outlaws, Star Wars Eclipse, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic all essentially dodging that present-day era seems to suggest that it¡¯s to be avoided at all costs, at least explicitly.
Star Wars Outlaws does feature sequel trilogy planets such as Cantonica and Kijimi, to be fair, and therefore it¡¯s great that some of its iconography has made its way to other corners of the galaxy far, far away. Likewise, it¡¯s highly unlikely that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor would¡¯ve had a crossguard lightsaber stance if it wasn¡¯t for how iconic Kylo Ren¡¯s hilt is, and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga featured the sequel trilogy as a licensed adaptation of all nine movies. Either way, not having a new Star Wars game wedged between the seventh, eighth, and ninth movies in the Skywalker Saga seems like a missed opportunity that a trilogy of movies 10, 11, and 12 hopefully won¡¯t overlook.
Plus, it¡¯s possible that the Star Wars Jedi franchise has monopolized a quota of Jedi-related games, and it could open that blast door to a wealth of stories and game adaptations in the future when it eventually concludes.
Star Wars Trilogies are a Shorthand for Narrative Experiences and Events
Part of what makes the Star Wars Jedi franchise or Star Wars Outlaws so intriguing is the fact that players don¡¯t need to parse what the state of the galaxy is if they¡¯re familiar with the lore and context of different eras or trilogies. Star Wars Jedi¡¯s series taking place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope declares that Jedi are refugees and the Galactic Empire is an omnipotent threat, for instance, while Star Wars Outlaws taking place between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi declares that criminal syndicates are running rampant and the rebellion effort is nearing its zenith.
It¡¯s currently unknown what may occur during Star Wars¡¯ upcoming trilogy, but having Star Wars¡¯ next Soulslike game be an adaptation of a story led by Rey could be a phenomenal way to honor her as a protagonist. Indeed, the Soulslike subgenre has treated Star Wars exceedingly well. Whatever shape Star Wars¡¯ Jedi tales take in the future, there will hopefully be more where Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor came from, even if Cal Kestis, BD-1, and the Stinger Mantis crew are shelved.
