Fortnite Battle Stars Were a More Exciting Way to Unlock the Battle Pass and Should Come Back
Fortnite?removed the Battle Stars Level Up system from?Fortnite. Now, leveling up means players get to unlock a Battle Pass reward. Even though it simplifies how the Battle Pass works, it's not as fun. Before, each type of reward would be worth a certain number of Battle Stars and it felt fair to only spend 2 Battle Stars to get an emoticon but 8 Battle Stars to unlock a skin. Since you have to level up a full account level to unlock a reward each time, it doesn't feel worth the cost when you spend it on smaller rewards, such as sprays and emoticons.
When Does A Game Have Too Much AI Involvement?
I am very averse to the use of AI, especially if it is used to spread misinformation or used to replace what could have been someone's job (and, of course, any so-called "creative" uses of AI in arts and culture spaces). But I don't mind AI when it's used in smart ways, or as an additional tool for creators to use in the conceptualization process, and I have strong doubts that Elon's idea to start a studio that's completely dependent on AI will create anything unique or industry-defining.?
Do You Have Any Tips For First-Time PC Builds In 2024?
A common mistake a lot of first time PC builders make is not taking the size of their parts into account. It's important to check the exact size and dimensions of your parts before committing to a build, and check that there aren't any compatibility issues between your parts too. There are a few sites that let you simulate a build to find these issues, but some don't take real-life size and positioning into account. It doesn't matter how good your GPU is if it doesn't fit into your case, or doesn't work with your motherboard.
If You Could Change One Thing About Your PC, What Would It Be?
I would really like to set up a liquid cooling system for my PC one day, my current setup will get a bit hot after a few hours of gaming and it would be really nice to not have to worry about that as much. But I'm worried about leaks and how catastrophic that could be for my setup ¨C as low of a chance as it might be, It's still a risk that I'm going to have to think hard about and make sure to keep up maintenance when I do eventually get a liquid cooling system.
What's More Important For Budget PC Builds: High FPS Or Image Quality?
If you're making your first step into the custom desktop PC market, whether you're used to playing on laptops or new to gaming in general, being able to run games at a higher framerate can be mind-blowing. When I got my first proper gaming PC and launched?Dark Souls 3?for the first time on the new setup, I was in absolute?awe?that I could run it at 60 FPS with the setup I had, even if I could only run it at 720p. But at the time it still looked and felt great to play because of the higher framerate, and it really impressed me when I made the jump from laptop to desktop PC gamer.
What's The Most Youve Ever Spent On A PC Upgrade?
I'm about to buy an AMD 6900 xt for a big upgrade to my current PC setup that will hopefully last a few years, and in terms of the individual things I've purchased, this GPU will certainly be the most expensive thing in my case at about $450 used. Hopefully it remains a good graphics card for a few generations so I won't have to worry about another upgrade for a few years.
What's The Oldest Game You Still Play In 2024?
I'm not very good at it, but I gone back to replay the first three?Warcraft?RTS games a few times over the years. With the Remastered versions of the first two?Warcraft?games out now, I'm returning to the 30-year-old?Warcraft 1?once again ¨C and though the games have a lot of dated mechanics, there's still a lot of charm to them, especially with the polish put into them with the remasters.

What Are You Playing This Weekend? (November 8)
Another working week is over, so I'll be kicking back on my console for the weekend! I'm currently enjoying?Dragon Age: The Veilguard, but when I'm after a change of pace I've been getting back into Return To Moria. I think the latter is better than the reviews indicated, I've really loved being able to live my best dwarf life while building my own little camps along the journey.

Should Microsoft Flight Simulator Be Added To Cloud Gaming Services?
The new 2024 edition of Microsoft Flight Simulator is due to be released in November, and it requires a lot of RAM to run on the ideal settings. Given how demanding the game is becoming, should it be offered on cloud streaming services to allow those with slower PCs to still enjoy it?
What's Your Go-To Uber Eats Order For A Game Session?
There are few better ways to spend an evening then unpacking an Uber Eats order, switching on your favorite gaming system, and just losing yourself in a game session. But the food must be?just?right for the optimal experience. I myself can't go past a good Hawaiian pizza (yep, pineapple on pizza, let's hear it) or some nachos. It has to be something easy to grab and bite into so you can focus on the game.
What's The Best Game Nobody Has Heard Of?
In the mid 90s, a game was released titled Gazillionaire, in which you take the role of an intergalactic trading company in a race to be the first to get 5,000,000 Kublars in a newly-opened-to-trade Galaxy. A lot of the game is randomly generated, positive and negative random events would play out when you visited planets or while traveling, and the simple gameplay of buying low and selling high is still surprisingly captivating ¨C you feel the thrill of a great sale at the start and after 200 turns, after all. Though its overall game design is almost as dated as its maximum resolution, its seemingly hand-drawn bizarre visuals, strange spacey sound design, and wacky writing has a 90s charm that's authentically its own thing, and authentically?weird.?
What Are You Playing This Weekend? (August 9)
I'm on the road this week so I've been sticking to some of the games I've got on my PC. With?Age Of Mythology: Retold?coming out, I will absolutely be putting some time into playing the original. In preparation for?Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2, I might also reintroduce myself to the franchise through the original ork-busting?Space Marine.
What's Your Fondest Memory Of Game Informer?
Since August of 1991, gamers have looked forward to receiving their next monthly issue of Game Informer. After hearing the sad news that the magazine will cease its publication, now is a time for us to reflect on those memorable articles, insightful reviews, and news we got from each issue. I myself didn't get a chance to sample a lot of Game Informer issues, but the few I did were a refreshing change of pace from the standard online news and features I would read. There's something about physical copies, whether in magazines, books, or games, that have a certain magic to them, so it's a true loss for the industry that Game Informer is closing its doors.
What Are You Playing This Weekend? (August 2)
With the Marvel Rivals beta test wrapping up this weekend, I'll be trying to play as much as I can and earn those slick alternate skins. Outside of that, I've never really had the chance to properly sit down and give Red Dead Redemption 2 a go, so I think I'll get that kick started and see what all the fuss is about.
Do You Use Mouse & Keyboard Or A Controller On PC?
Everyone who plays games on a PC knows whether they prefer a keyboard and mouse or controller when playing games. It doesn't matter how long you've been playing; we all have a preference. For me, I think it definitely depends on the game. If it is a game that is complex, like The Elder Scrolls Online, I prefer to play it with a mouse and keyboard. However, I prefer racing and shooting games to be on a controller.
Opinion: Summons Should Be Included In Soulslike Games
Soulslike games tend to be uncompromising when it comes to having difficulty selectors, and while I think that's perfectly fine, I believe they should at least have summons (or NPC allies in general) available to help take some of the edge off. Elden Ring proved having summons available for almost every boss fight is alright ¡ª traditional Souls players could ignore the mechanic completely, but it was always there for everyone else.
Hot Take: Thematic Skins Are Better Than Crossover Cosmetics
I don't mind cosmetics like COD's CDL outfits or alternate universe skins from League of Legends, but I draw the line at having characters from other titles (or even real-life celebrities) getting unceremoniously added to games as skins. Over-the-top skins are fine, but having Homelander kill me with an AKM in Call of Duty is a completely different level of immersion breaking.
What Game Has The Most Satisfying Sniper Rifles?
For me, it's Battlefield 1. Everything about BF1's bolt-action rifles, from the beautiful weapon models, punchy firing sounds, range-based sweet spot mechanic, and clean animations all blend in with the game's immaculate vibe to create a blissful sniping experience.
What's The Scariest Non-Horror Game You've Played?
For me, it's Subnautica, and I'm sure my fellow Thalassophobes out there would agree. It's not a horror game, but it comes with that sense of dread that always comes with deep sea exploration, except it's much worse here because you know there's something big lurking in the waters.
What's Your Favorite Superhero Game?
It's got to be Marvel's Spider-Man for me. I know that it built upon the existing Batman Arkham formula, but I'm a sucker for Spidey, and gameplay aside, the story is pretty good. It has so many cinematic superhero moments that really makes you feel like your watching and playing a movie at the same time.
What's The Best City Builder You've Played So Far?
I've played quite a few city builders in the past, but none of them was quite as unique as Frostpunk. The city-building elements are all there, but there's also this constant feeling of desperation and scarcity that truly made it one of the most interesting builder games I've played so far.
Which Game Has The Most Memorable Opening Sequence?
Bioshock was the first thing that popped into my mind. It's pretty tame as far as opening sequences are concerned, but it perfectly set the tone for the rest of the game. The execution for it was spot-on as well. Andrew Ryan monologuing while the Bathysphere slowly descended into the bottom of the ocean will always be memorable to me.
What Game Should Everyone Play Before They Die?
We're talking absolute must-plays that, even if you aren't a fan of the genre its in, you should still check it out just to appreciate it for what it is and how impactful it is on the industry. For me personally, it would be Skyrim, but that's coming from someone who grew up on PlayStations and has always loved fantasy-driven stories. There is plenty to be said about masterpieces like Red Dead Redemption 2 or the plethora of top-quality Mario titles. Let's not forget the classics, though, I feel like everyone should have at least tried out games like Space Invaders before their time is up.
What Is The Best Zombie Game You've Played So Far?
I cannot understate how many good zombie games there are. If I had to pick just one out of the many I've played, it's No More Room In Hell. Not many games do Romero-style shambler zombies as well as this one does, and this game feels a lot like playing a Resident Evil game in first person (and with friends).
What Are Your Favorite Co-Op Shooters?
I am currently bouncing between Warhammer 40,000: Darktide and Helldivers 2. I'm a sucker for horde shooters, and both these games get the feel of combat just right.
What Game Deserves A Remake The Most?
This kind of falls more under the revival category, but if I were to pick a game to get remade in 2024, it'd have to be Red Alert 2. RTS games aren't as popular nowadays, but if you bring back a genre titan like Red Alert 2 with modernized controls, gameplay, and graphics, it might just make a comeback.
Why Are There So Many Game Remasters Lately?
I don't particularly mind seeing games get remastered, but I would rather see new entries or total remakes rather than refurbished versions of old titles. Remakes in the same level as the ones for the original Resident Evil games are very much welcome in my book, but if it's just a graphical update that's being sold at full price, then it's a hard pass for me.
Hot Take: Having Fun Is More Important Than Winning
A friend of mine often plays VALORANT when we're hanging out on Discord, and sometimes I wonder if he's actually having fun. The stress and disappointment of losing seems to get to him more often than not, and in retrospect, those are the same reasons why I've taken gaming less seriously lately. I still play competitive games every now and then, but it's always with friends, and always with the "go have fun" mindset.
