Developers of digital-only games, take note: there’s a new service in town that will help you crowdfund and produce a limited physical edition of your game packed with “feelies” like posters, statues and mixtapes.
It’s called Gamer’s Edition, and it’s much akin to the established IndieBox service insofar as its aim to produce premium physical versions of otherwise ephemeral digital games.
But while IndieBox is a $15/month subscription service, Gamer’s Edition seeks to partner with developers to do a one-time production run that only happen if enough people pledge interest by pre-ordering within a limited timeframe.
If you don’t hit enough orders to justify production by the time the campaign ends, no money changes hands. You can see an example of how this works over on the Gamer’s Edition website, which is currently sourcing interest in a $60 Hotlime Miami/Hotline Miami 2 boxed set and a $70 Papers, Please collector’s edition.
The service is launching under the aegis of Gamer Network, the media business responsible for, among other things, the Eurogamer and USGamer online publications.
